具体用途
络合剂、掩蔽剂、沉淀剂、还原剂。分析中用以检定和测定铍、钙、铬、金、锰、锶、钍等金属离子。显微微晶分析检验钠和其他元素。沉淀钙、镁、钍和稀土元素。校准高锰酸钾和硫酸铈溶液的标准溶液。漂白剂。助染剂。也可用来除去衣服上的铁锈建筑行业在涂刷外墙涂料前、由于墙面碱性较强应先涂刷草酸除碱。
印染工业用作显色助染剂、漂白剂、医药中间体。塑料工业用于生产聚氯乙烯、氨基塑料、脲醛塑料。

用作酚醛树脂合成的催化剂，催化反应温和，过程比较平稳，持续时间最长。草酸丙酮溶液能催化环氧树脂固化反应，缩短固化时间。也用作合成脲醛树脂、三聚氰胺甲醛树脂的pH值调节剂。还可加入聚乙烯醇缩甲醛水溶性胶黏剂中提高干燥速度和粘接强度。亦用作脲醛树脂的固化剂、金属离子螯合剂。可用作KMnO4氧化剂制备淀粉胶黏剂的促进剂，加快氧化速度，缩短反应时间。

作漂白剂
草酸主要用作还原剂和漂白剂，用于生产抗菌素和冰片等药物以及提炼稀有金属的溶剂、染料还原剂、鞣革剂等。

草酸还可用于钴-钼-铝催化剂的生产、金属和大理石的清洗及纺织品的漂白。

用于金属表面清洗和处理，稀土元素提取、纺织印染、皮革加工、催化剂制备等。

作还原剂
在有机合成工业主要用于生产对苯二酚、季戊四醇、草酸钴、草酸镍、没食子酸等化工产品。

塑料工业用于生产聚氯乙烯、氨基塑料、脲醛塑料、漆片等。

染料工业用于制造盐基品绿等。

印染工业可代替乙酸，用作色素染料的显色助染剂、漂白剂。
