对成人为非必需氨基酸，但体内生成速度较慢，对婴幼儿为必需氨基酸，有一定解毒作用。
天然品大量存在于鱼精蛋白等中，亦为各种蛋白质的基本组成，故存在十分广泛。
分子式：C6H14N4O2
分子量：174.20
性状:白色斜方晶系(二水物)晶体或白色结晶性粉末.熔点244℃(分解).经水重结晶后,于105 ℃失去结晶水.其水溶性呈强碱性,可从空气中吸收二氧化碳.溶于水(15%,21℃),不溶于乙醚,微溶于乙醇.

营养增补剂.精氨酸是鸟氨酸循环中的一个组成成分具有极其重要的生理功能.多吃精氨酸,可以增加肝脏中精氨酸(arginase)的活性,有助于将血液中的氨转变为尿素而排泄出去.所以,精氨酸对高氨血症,肝脏机能障碍等.
L-精氨酸也是精子蛋白的主要成分,有促进精子的质量,提高精子运动能量的作用.
精氨酸可有效提高免疫力、促进免疫系统分泌自然杀伤细胞、吞噬细胞、白血球内烯素 (interleukin-1) 等内生性物质，有利于对抗癌细胞及预防病毒感染。另外，精氨酸是鸟氨酸 (L-ornithine) 及脯氨酸 (L-proline) 的前趋物，脯氨酸是构成胶原蛋白的重要元素，补充精氨酸对于严重外伤、烧伤等需要大量组织修护的康护，具有明显的帮助，同时具有降低感染及发炎的效果。
精氨酸对于部分因为肾压过高而产生的肾病变及部分排尿困难的现象，皆具有改善作用，不过由于精氨酸是氨基酸，也可能对肾衰竭患者造成负担，因此对于严重肾机能低下者使用前，最好先与主治医师商量。
