α-硫辛酸是在1951年，美国科学家Reed等首次从猪肝中分离出来的具有活性的天然产物。其生理活性仅局限于R 体，S体基本无活性，但也没有毒副作用。α-硫辛酸属于维生素B类药物。在临床上α-硫辛酸用于治疗神经性糖尿病，缺血再灌注等疾病；另外α-硫辛酸对于肝病、老年痴呆、白内障、心脏病等多种疾病有显著的治疗效果，并写能有效的抑制HIV-1在细胞中的扩散。
α-硫辛酸是既具水溶性又具脂溶性的淡黄色晶体。目前仍处于右旋硫辛酸取代外消旋硫辛酸的过程之中。全世界的年需求量大概为400吨，并且正持续上涨，但产量仅为200t左右。
现在普遍工业化的生产是用6，8-二氯辛酸乙酯为原料来合成α-硫辛酸，但是这个产品在夏天分子活跃，所以只能再冬天低温的条件下生产。且污染很大，导致α-硫辛酸一直处于稀缺状态。
α--硫辛酸别誉为“万能抗氧化剂”，它可以在体内转变成二氢硫辛酸（DHLA），硫辛酸和二氢硫辛酸都具有很强的抗氧化性。都能够有效的清除自由基，预防体内氧化应激的反应。
自由基诱导的氧化损伤长期以来都被认为是导致衰老发生的重要原因之一。所以α-硫辛酸可以通过消除自由基发挥抗衰老作用

Alpha-lipoic acid is an active natural product first isolated from pig liver by Reed et al., an American scientist in 1951. Its physiological activity is only limited to R body, S body is basically inactive, but there is no toxic side effect. Alpha-lipoic acid belongs to the B vitamin class. In clinic, alpha-lipoic acid is used to treat neurodiabetes, ischemia-reperfusion and other diseases. In addition, alpha-lipoic acid has a significant therapeutic effect on liver disease, senile dementia, cataract, heart disease and other diseases, and can effectively inhibit the spread of HIV-1 in cells.
Alpha-lipoic acid is a light yellow crystal that is both water-soluble and fat-soluble. It is still in the process of dextro-lipoic acid replacing racemic lipoic acid. The world's annual demand is around 400 tonnes and rising, but production is only around 200t.
The current industrial production of alpha-lipoic acid is based on ethyl 6, 8-dichloro-octyl acid, but this product is molecular-active in summer, so it can only be produced in winter at low temperatures. And pollution is so high that alpha-lipoic acid remains scarce.
Alpha-lipoic acid, also known as the "universal antioxidant," converts to DHLA in the body. Both lipoic acid and dihydrolipoic acid have strong antioxidant properties. Both can effectively eliminate free radicals and prevent the reaction of oxidative stress in the body.
