用途有机合成的原料，可用于生产乙二醇。羟基乙酸主要用作清洗剂。2%的羟基乙酸和1%的甲酸混合配成的混合酸，是一种效率高成本低的洗涤剂，适合于清洗空调机；可制取纤维染色剂、清净剂、焊接剂的配料、清漆配料、铜蚀剂、粘合剂、石油破乳剂和金属螯合剂等；羟基乙酸的钠盐、钾盐用作电镀液添加剂。其他的用途还有电解研磨、金属酸洗、皮革染色和鞣革剂等。也可用作化学分析试剂。

Pure chemical properties are colorless, deliquescent crystals. Industrial products are 70 % aqueous solutions, pale yellow liquids, and have a odor similar to caramel. Soluble in water, ethanol and ethers.
Used as a raw material for organic synthesis and can be used for the production of ethylene glycol. Hydroxyacetic acid is mainly used as a cleaning agent. A mixture of 2 % hydroxyacetic acid and 1 % formic acid is a high-efficiency and low-cost detergent suitable for cleaning air conditioners; Can be made of fiber dyeing agent, cleaning agent, solder ingredients, varnish ingredients, copper etching agent, binder, petroleum emulsifier and metal chelating agent; Sodium and potassium salts of hydroxyacetic acid are used as additives in electroplating fluids. Other uses include electrolytic grinding, metal pickling, leather dyeing and tannants. It can also be used as a chemical analysis reagent.
