理化性质编辑
该品为薄菏油中得到的一种饱和的环状醇。又名薄荷醇、薄荷冰。易燃，燃烧充分，燃烧中无烟。该品为无色针状或棱柱状结晶或白色结晶性粉末；有薄荷的特殊香气，味初灼热后清凉；乙醇溶液显中性反应。本品在乙醇、氯仿、乙醚、液状石蜡或挥发油中极易溶解，在水中极微溶解。
性质与稳定性编辑
1. 左旋的为无色针状结晶。溶于乙醇，与油类互溶。具有凉的、清鲜的、愉快的薄荷特征香气，带甜的尖刺气。给人以冷的感觉，香气透发，但不够持久。口味亦是鲜清甜的凉味。
2. 存在于烤烟烟叶、香料烟烟叶、主流烟气中。
3. 天然存在于椒样薄荷油、日本薄荷油中，少量存在于香叶油等精油中。
4. 共有12中异构体。
5. 普通的晶体表面有微量的液体油和极微量的不挥发物，合成的薄荷醇是各种异构体的混合物。
6.有一定毒性、刺激性和过敏性反应。 [2]

主要用途编辑
1.薄荷脑和消旋薄荷脑均用作牙膏、香水、饮料和糖果等的赋香剂。在医药上用作刺激药，作用于皮肤或粘膜，有清凉止痒作用；内服可作为驱风药，用于头痛及鼻、咽、喉炎症等。其酯用于香料和药物。在世界上，我国和巴西是主要的天然薄荷生产园，薄荷油的年产量均达到2000-3000t。
2.广泛用于日用香精、食用香精、烟用香精。一般在口香糖中1100mg/kg；糖果中400mg/kg；烘烤食品中130mg/kg；冰淇淋68mg/kg；软饮料中35mg/kg。
3. 有杀菌和防腐作用。
4.用作疗效性化妆品的特殊添加剂。用于花露水等。亦可用作牙膏、香水、饮料和糖果等的赋香剂。用于制糖果、饮料、香料及药用
