甲酸的羟基被二甲胺基取代生成的化合物。在空气中加热至350℃以上时即分解，生成一氧化碳和二甲胺。N，N-二甲基甲酰胺是很好的非质子极性溶剂，能溶解多数有机物和无机物。许多离子型反应在N，N- 二甲基甲酰胺中要比在一般的质子溶剂中更易进行，例如在室温下羧酸盐与卤代烃在N，N-二甲基甲酰胺中反应，能生成高产率的酯。
