化学性质
经氧化或脱氢反应生成苯甲醛。加氢可生成甲苯、联苄或甲基环己烷、环己基甲醇。与羧酸进行酯化反应生成相应的酯。在氯化锌、三氟化硼、无水硼酸或磷酸及硫酸存在下，缩合成树脂状物。
作用与用途编辑
苄醇是极有用的定香剂，是茉莉、月下香、伊兰等香精调配时不可缺少的香料。用于配制香皂；日用化妆香精。但苄醇能缓慢地自然氧化，一部分生成苯甲醛和苄醚，使市售产品常带有杏仁香味，故不宜久贮。苄醇在工业化学品生产中用途广泛。用于涂料溶剂；照相显影剂；聚氯乙烯稳定剂；医药；合成树脂溶剂；维生素b注射液的溶剂；药膏或药液的防腐剂。可用作尼龙丝；纤维及塑料薄膜的干燥剂，染料；纤维素酯；酪蛋白的溶剂，制取苄基酯或醚的中间体。同时，广泛用于制笔（圆珠笔油）；油漆溶剂等。
苄醇在化妆品组分中为限用防腐剂，最大用量为1%。
GB 2760--1996规定为暂时允许使用的食用香料。亦为定香剂、油脂溶剂。作为香料，主要用于配制浆果、果仁等型香精。用于制备花香油和药物等，也用作香料的溶剂和定香剂；用作溶剂、增塑剂、防腐剂, 并用于香料、肥皂、药物、染料等的制造。
